Ever since hearing OMD, Ultravox and several other bands during the 1980s Synthpop explosion, I started playing around with synths to see If I could make great tunes, then around 2005, I was playing with software called "Propellerhead Reason" - a virtual recording studio kitted out with synths, sequencers, samplers, full mixing desk, effects and production.
Now I use "Ardour" A free* Digital Audio Workstation...basically a virtual recording studio packed full of synths, effects pedals and mixing desk. MUCH better than a single synth and a 4 track cassette-based recording machine back in the 1980s!
